Englantilainen Sheila Robinson (1925-1988) on ehdottomasti yksi suosikkigraafikkoni. Hän asui Edward Bawdenin ympärille kerääntyneessä Great Bardfieldin taiteilijayhteisössä Essexissä. Robinsonin aiheet ovat usein kotoisia, kissoja, kukkia, huonekaluja kuten tässä litografiassa. Kissa nukkuu pyöreällä kerällä tuolilla, jonka istuin on myös pyöreä. Ei ehkä kovin mukava nukkumapaikka! Perspektiivi on hylätty ja värit ovat herkkiä: harmaata ja oranssia. Taustalla oleva tapettikuvio on varmaan yksi Robinsonin itse suunnittelemista.

English Sheila Robinson (1925-1988) is definitely one of my most favorite graphic artists. She lived in the artist commune gathered around Edward Bawden in Great Bardfield in Essex. Robinson's subjects were often domestic, cats, flowers, furniture like in this lithograph. A cat is sleeping coiled up on a chair, and the seat is also round. Perhaps the most comfortable place to sleep. The perspective is rejected and the colours are tender, grey and orange. The pattern of the wallpaper on the background is perhaps designed by Robinson herself. 

JOULUKISSA / CHRISTMAS CAT

Sain idean vedostaa kerällä oleva kissa -linoleikkaukseni revitylle pyöreälle paperinpalalle. Kokeilin erivärisiä kartonkeja pohjapaperina ja osaan leikkasin suunnilleen kissankokoisen aukon pyöreään paperiin. Hauskaa sommittelua, ja eiköhän näistä jonkun voi tehdä joulukortiksikin.

I got an idea to print my linocut of a coiled cat on a round torn piece of paper. I tested different coloured cardboard as a base paper, and on some of the round papers I cut a hole approximately the size of the cat. That was fun to arrange these and surely one of them will be a Christmas card. 

HELGE RISKULA -NÄYTTELY / AXHIBITION

Galleria Saskiassa on tamperelaisen Helge Riskulan (s. 1951) 40-vuotisjuhlanäyttely. Esillä on monenlaista: tussipiirroksia, veistoksia, sekatekniikkaa, romua. Jotain muistumaa aiheissa ja niiden käsittelyssä on 1970-luvulta: pop-taidetta, undergound, elokuvaa.. Kaikki tuntuu jotenkin nostalgiselta, joka ehkä ei ole ollut tarkoitus. Minusta jotkut tussipiirrokset ovat kauniita, usein pitkinä sarjana, josta pitää malttaa katsoa kutakin erikseenkin. 40 vuotta ja taiteilija yhä etsii...

Helge Riskula's (b. 1951) 40th Anniversary exhibition is in Gallery Saskia in Tampere. There are on display many sorts of art: ink drawings, sculptures, mixed media, trash. There definitely can be traced some recollections from the 1970's: pop art,underground, movies. It all semms to be somehow nostalgic, which perhaps has not been the purpose. I found some of the ink drawings beautiful, but you have to have patience to see one drawing separately from a long series of the same kind. 40 years and the artist is still searching...

Mustavalkoinen nukkuva kissa on osa Edouard Manetin maalausta Nainen ja kissa (1880-1882). Taustan punertava väri on naisen hame, ja siinäkin voi nähdä hienon impressionistisen siveltimenkäytön. Mutta kissa se vasta onkin impressionistinen. Pää ja tassut on tehty muutamalla siveltimenvedolla. Mustassa turkissa erottuvat hyvin siniset vedot, jotka toistavat kissan turkin kiiltoa.

The black and white cat is a part of Edouard Manet's painting Woman with a Cat (1880-1882). The reddish colour on the background is the woman's dress, and even here you can see the fine Impressionist use of the brush. But the cat is really Impressionist.The head and paws are made with just a few brush strokes. On the black fur there are blue stokes, which replicate finely the shine of the fur.

PAULA REGO - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Lontoossa käydessä tarkistan aina, onko missään nähtävissä Paula Regon (s. 1935) taidetta, ja oli nytkin Marlborough galleriassa. Esillä oli joukko tosi isoja 150 x 150 cm pastellipiirroksia, ja aiheena oli Disneyn Fantasia-elokuvasta tuttu Strutsien tanssi. Tämä sarja oli tehty vuonna 1996, mutta siinä ei ollut mitään vanhentunutta. Värit olivat syviä, tummia ja herkullisia, samoin tanssijoiden asennot. Selvästi Rego oli käyttänyt malleja, ja perspektiivit toivat työt ihan katsojan iholle.

When visiting London I always check if there is Paula Rego's (b. 1935) art to be seen anywhere, and there was now at Marlborough Gallery. There were on display really large 150 x 150 cm pastel drawings, and the subject was Dancing Ostriches from Disney's film Fantasia. This series was done already in 1996, but there was nothing outdated in here. The colours were dark, deep and delicious, and so were the postures of the dancers. Clearly Rego had used models, and the perspectives brought these works quite to the skin of the spectator.

Pääsin kurkistamaan Lontoossa Royal Academy of Artsin vain museon ystäville tarkoitettuun "klubitilaan" The Sir Hugh Casson Roomiin, jossa oli mielenkiintoinen näyttely Surface Cutting (Pintaleikkauksia). Seinillä oli toinen toistaan kiehtovampia uusia puupiirroksia, puukaiverruksia, etsauksia, silkkipainoa ja linoleikkauksiakin. Nyt piti hiukan kurkotella teetään juovien museon ystävien yli seinille - olisi kyllä ollut aihetta ihan kaikille avoimeenkin näyttelyyn! Tekijöissä oli monta tuttua nimeä: Bill Jacklin, Tracey Emin, Grayson Perry, Vanessa Jackson, Eileen Cooper ja monta muuta. Tämä oli myyntinäyttely, ja hinnat vaihtelivat tosi paljon. Halvimmasta päästä esimerkkinä Jonathan Ashworthin Save the Polar Bears, 26,5 x 36,5 cm  puukaiverrus, 120 puntaa ja kalliimmasta Eileen Cooperin Diva, ihana, monivärinen, voimakas ja iso 142 x 95 cm linoleikkaus, 3,250 puntaa.

I managed to peek into The Sir Hugh Casson Room, the only for the friends of the museum reserved space in Royal Academy of Arts in London. There was an interesting exhibition Surface Cutting. There were on the walls really interesting new woodcuts, wood engravings, etchings, silk-screens, and linocuts. Now I had to reach over the tea-drinking museum friends - truly there would have been reason for an exhibition open for everybody! There were many familiar names among the exhibitors:  Bill Jacklin, Tracey Emin, Grayson Perry, Vanessa Jackson, Eileen Cooper and many more. This was a sales exhibiton, and the prices were very varied. En example from the cheaper end here is Jonathan Ashworth's Save the Polar Bears, 26,5 x 36,5 cm wood engraving, 120 pounds and from the more expensive example: Eileen Cooper's Diva, a wonderful, multi-coloured, powerful and big 142 x 95 cm linocut, 3,250 pounds.

ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

1900-luvun abstraktin ekpressionismin keskeisimmät tekijät ja työt ovat esillä ytimekkäästi nimetyssä näyttelyssä Abstact Expressionism Lontoon Royal Academy of Artsissa. Itse olen enemmän esittävän taiteen ystävä, siis hiukan ennakkoluuloinen, mutta näyttely oli hieno kokemus. Rakastuin Mark Rothkon (1903-1970) suuriin väritutkielmiin, joihin voi uppoutua ja tuntea melkein sulavansa taulujen värimassaan. Etenkin oranssit, punaiset ja keltaiset lumosivat. Samoin Jackson Pollockin (1912-1956) valtavat värisekoitukset näyttivät luonnossa monitasoisilta ja sävykkäiltä, ihan muuta mitä painokuvien mukaan voisi päätellä. Robert Motherwellin (1915-1991) muutamissa mustavalkoisissa akryylimaalauksissa välkkyi kuin lunta. Ja Clyfford Stillin (1904-1980) monet valtavat kankaat muistuttivat Marimekon kuvioita.

The central works of Abstract Expressionism in the 1900's are featured in the aptly named exhibition Abstract Expressionism at The Royal Academy of Arts in London. I am more like a friend of the figurative art, so a bit prejudiced, but the exhibition was a fine experience. I fell love in Mark Rothko's (1903-1970) large colours studies. You can really sink into them and almost feel like melting into the colour mass of the paintings. Especially the yellows, oranges and reds were fascinating. Jackson Pollock's (1912-1956) huge colour mixtures were much more multi-level and tuneful seen in nature than what you might expect after seeing just printed pictures. Some Robert Motherwell's (1915-1991) black and white acrylic paintings shimmered like snow. And Clyfford Still's (1904-1980) many big paintings looked like Marimekko patterns.

BEYOND CARAVAGGIO - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Lontoon National Galleryn näyttely Beyond Caravaggio (Caravaggion seuraajat) on tosi tumma. Maalauksissa on valoa niukasti, vain jokunen kuunsäde, illankajo, lyhty tai kynttilä. Valolla korostettiin usein voimakkaita ilmeitä, vääntyneitä asentoja, uhkaavia tilanteita tai pyhimysten hohtoa. Näyttelyssä on vain muutama Caravaggion työ, ja 1600-luvun seuraajien töitä on aika vaikea erottaa "aidoista" Caravaggioista. Ja Caravaggion vaikutus ulottuu 1600-lukua kauemmaksikin. Olin näkevinäni näissä tummissa maalauksissa samoja sävyjä kuin vaikkapa Film Noir-tyyppisissä elokuvissa, värivalokuvauksessa tai Art Deco-tyylisuunnan mahtipontisuudessa.

The Exhibition Beyond Caravaggio in National Gallery in London is really dark. There is only just a trifle of light in the paintings, some moon beams, evening glow, lantern or candle. The light is there for the highlighting of usually strong facial expressions, contorted postures, threatening situations or glamour of the saints. There are only a few of Caravaggio's works in the exhibition, and it is actually hard to separate the "real" Caravaggios from the style of his followers from the 1600's. And the influence of Caravaggio spans even further. I think I saw in these dark paintings the same nuances than in Film Noir-movies, colour photography or in the pomposity of Art Deco style.

PICASSO PORTRAITS -NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Näyttely Picasso Portraits Picasson muotokuvista National Portrait Galleryssa Lontoossa on elämys. Ainakin tämän perusteella on pakko myöntää, että Picasso oli nero - ja tuottelias. Näyttelyssä voi seurata muotokuvien ja omakuvien kautta, miten Picasson tyylit kehittyivät tai vaihtuivat. Hienosti tulee esiin myös se, mistä kaikkialta Picasso imi vaikutteita omiin töihinsä. Hän oli oikeastaan nerokas kopioija, mutta hän pystyi aina säilyttämään töissään ihan oman jälkensä. Kaikki tekniikat tuntuivat kiinnostavan Picassoa: maalaus, piirustus, grafiikka, sarjakuvat, karikatyyrit, keramiikka ja kuvanveisto. Vaikutteet ovat selvästi nähtävissä useissa töissä: Matisse, Munch, Touloise-Lautrec, Braque, Velasguez ja monet muut. Omakuvien lisäksi muotokuvissa aiheina ovat hänen vaimonsa, lapsensa ja lähipiirinsä. Vaikutteista huolimatta muotokuvissa on kuitenkin aina jotain Picassomaista, muutamalla pienellä yksityiskohdalla loihdittu kuvattavan kohteen persoonallisuuteen liittyvä piirre: asento, silmät, kasvot, tukka tai vaatteet. Hengästyttävä kokemus!

This exhibition Picasso Portraits of Picasso's portraits in National Portrait Gallery in London is a thrill. At least after seeing this you have to admit, that Picasso was a genius - and a productive one. In this exhibition you can follow trough his portraits how his styles developed and changed. Also it is finely depicted from where Picasso absorbed influences to his own art works. He really was an ingenious copier, but he maintained still his very own mark in all his works. Picasso seemed to be interested in all techniques: painting, drawing, graphics, comic strips, caricatures, ceramics, and sculpting. His influences are clearly seen in many of his works: Matisse, Munch, Touloise-Lautrec, Braque, Velasguez and many others. In addition to self-portraits there are his wives, his children and his close circle in the portraits. In spite of all the influences there still is always something very Picasso-style in the portraits, with a few small details captured feature linked with the personality of his subject: the posture, eyes. face, hair or clothes. A breath-taking experience!

Bruno Mason valokuvassa musta kissa venyttelee valkoisia tassujaan jollakin metallisella alustalla. Kuvan pääosassa ovat ilman muuta kissan mahtavat kynnet ja keltaisten silmien tiukka katse.

In this Bruno Maso's photograph a cat is stretching her white paws on some glittering material. In the main role are evidently the mighty nails and the strict gaze of the cat.

I have collected quite a large number of cat cards over decades. Museum shops are treasure-troves for a cat card collector. Several of my cat cads are art cards.

Mychael Barrattin öljymaalauksen nimi on Matiisse's Cat (Matissen kissa). Ja jotain samaa Matissen värien keveyttä tässä kuvassa ilman muuta on. Varsinkin punaiset pienet kalat muistuttavat Matissesta. Kissan silmät on hauskasti kuvattu hiukan suurentuneina lasin läpi. Etelä-Ranskan tunnelmaa!

Mychael Barratt's oil painting is called Matisse's Cat. Ans there really is something similar to Matisse's light colours in this picture. Especially the little red fishes remind me of Matisse. The eyes of the cat are funnily enlarged trough the glass of the bowl. Feelings of the Southern France!

OLLI VIIRI - NÄYTTELY / EXHIBITION

Galleria Koppelossa on mainio pieni näyttely: tamperelaisen Olli Viirin (s. 1941) grafiikkaa/ digikollaaseja. Taiteilija sattui olemaan paikalla kun kävin näyttelyssä ja kuulin tarkemmin näiden teosten tekemisestä. Viiri on koonnut kuviin palasia omista vanhemmista toistään, useisiin kerroksiin, tulostanut kuvat ja päällä on vielä useampi keros lakkaa. Käsityöksi tätä digitaalista prosessia voisi kutsua. Kuvissa on mystistä syvyyttä ja joukossa hienoja yksityiskohtia. Melkein jokaisen haapapuun lehden voi erottaa kuvasta. Luonto on näissä kuvissa lähellä. Sattumalta näin galleria Saskian takahuoneessa useita Olli Viirin varhaisempia töitä, joista erityisesti Pispala-aiheinen tuntui aika läheiseltä. Puulle maalattu kuva taas näytti melkein naivistiselta. Aika pitkä matka varhaistöitä on tehty tähän Koppelon näyttelyyn.

In Gallery Koppelo in Tampere is a splendid small exhibition: Olli Viiri's (b. 1941) graphics/ digital collages. The artist happened to be present when I visited the exhibition and I heard more precise info about the making of these collages. Viiri has compiled the pictures of his earlier works, on several layers, printed the pictures and there is a a coating of lacquer on top. This kind of digital work must be called handiwork. There is mystic depth in the pictures and some fine details. You can distinguish almost every leaf of a aspen tree. The nature is really near in these pictures. By chance I happened to see in the backroom of gallery Saskia several of Olli Viiri's earlier works. I liked especially his linocut of Pispala - it felt somehow very close. One picture painted on a piece of wood looked almost naivist. Quite a long road from the early works to the ones in this exhibition in Koppelo.
