EDWARD BAWDEN´S LONDON

Lehtikirjoituksissa ja muuallakin kun mainitaan linoleikkaus, kehutaan myös yleensä englantilaista Edward Bawdenia (1903-1989). Tämä kirja todistaa samaa. Bawden oli erinomainen piirtäjä ja graafikko sekä paljon muuta. Hän teki useita suuria seinämaalauksia, tapettimalleja, julisteita jne. Tässä kirjassa "Edward Bawden´s London" on hyvä elämäkerta. Bawden tuntuu aika vaatimattomalta, aidolta ja työhönsä paneutuneelta taiteilijalta. Kirjan kuvat Lontoon rakennuksista, markkinoista, rautatieasemista ja tapahtumista ovat hurmaavia. Linoleikkauksien monikerroksisuus, useat värit ja hieno kuviointi hämmästyttävät. Miten nämä isot linoleikkaukset (esimerkiksi Covent Gardenin markkinoista) on oikein tehty?

Tower of London

When the linocutting is mentioned in articles or books, Edward Bawden´s (1903-1989) works are usually praised. This book shows that the praise is justified. Bawden was an excellent drawer, graphic and much more. He made several large murals, patterns for wallpaper, posters etc. In this book "Edward Bawden´s London" there is a good biography. Bawden seems to have been quite a modest, genuine and work related artist. The pictures in the book are charming: buildings, markets, railway stations, and happenings in London. The many layers in the linocuts, many colours, and fine patterns are amazing. How are these large linocuts (for example of Covent Garden market) really made?

This oil painting about cats in the mountains is a bit of a conundrum. How many cats is there in the picture? Well, there is four cats, and one of them almost gets lost in the leaves of the tree.

KALENTERI / CALENDAR

Kalentereita omista valokuvista on tosi helppo tilata internetissä. Firmoja on kymmeniä eikä hintakaan ole päätähuimaava. Teetin muutaman A3-kokoisen seinäkalenterin ja pienemmän kirjanmallisen viikkokalenterin tämän vuoden linoleikkauksistani. Ainakin nämä kalentereita tekevät liikkeet toimivat hyvin: A-print Tampereella (eikä tarvinnut maksaa postimaksuakaan kun haki itse kalenterit) ja Ifolor. 

It is really easy to order calendars from your own photographs in the internet. There are tens of firms and the price is not staggering. I ordered a few A3 sized wall calendars and smaller week calendars from my linocuts of this year. At least these firms in Finland functioned well: A-print in Tampere (and there was no cost for posting when I collected the calendars myself) and Ifolor.

PAINOTALO / PRINTING HOUSE

Viime päivät olen vedostanut viidestä linoleikkauksestani 15-20 kappaleen sarjoja. Nämä viisi työtä ovat mukana tammikuussa 2013 Art Pispala 
-gallerian vuosittaisessa naivistisen taiteen yhteisnäyttelyssä. Nyt vedoksia on valmiina 85 kpl ja se on käsin tehtynä aika paljon. Hankin vedosten kuivattamiseen pyykinkuivaustelineen, sillä saunan lauteet ja lattiat eivät riittäneet.

I have printed now for a few days 15-20 piece series per a lino of five of my linocuts. These five works will be in an annual naïve art joint exhibition in Art Pispala gallery in January 2013. Now there are 85 prints ready and it is quite a lot when I made them by hand. I bought a laundry drying rack for drying the prints because the benches and the floor of the sauna were not enough.

TOPI II

Keväällä tein neljästä linoleumin palasta kootun linoleikkauksen TOPI, jossa oli pätkä Pispalan portaita. Portaat ovat tosi pitkät ja korkeat, joten innostuin  jatkamaan tätä linoleikkausta kahdella uudella palasella. Nyt siitä tuli kuusipalaisena aika iso: 60 x 60 cm. Vedostaminen olikin sitten  aika vaikeaa käsin ja roskapaperia syntyi. Mahdankohan vielä lisätä uusia paloja portaisiin - kaksi lisää tekisi linon korkeudeksi 80 cm, mutta se olisi sitten jo varmaan mahdoton vedostaa käsin.

Six months ago I made a linocut (TOPI) from four pieces of linoleum. There is a small part of Pispala steps in this linocut. The steps are really long and high, so I became inspired to expire this linocut with two new pieces. Now made of six pieces the lino is quite big: 60 x 60 cm. The printing was somewhat difficult by hand and a lot of paper was wasted. Maybe I still continue to add new pieces to these steps - two pieces more makes the height of the lino to 80 cm, and it might be already impossible to print by hand.
